Are you looking to start your own fashion business or just want to gain knowledge on the fashion industry? There is tons of information out there, especially on-line, but if you would like to get real information from established professionals, a book might be the best way to go! Although the Internet gives countless information, there is a great deal lacking the proper information and overall reality of the fashion industry. Glamorous parties, expensive fashion shows and elaborate vacations are unfortunately a small and very scarce portion of the overall industry. Many writers have a lack of experience within the fashion industry and thus, create literature based on opinion than fact. Ultimately, there are a vast amount of exceptional authors that have written very informative books on fashion but there are two books through my extensive search that I have found especially relevant and enlightening.

Two of my all time favorite fashion books are “The Fashion Designer’s Survival Guide” by Mary Gehlhar and “Apparel Product Development: 2nd Edition” by Maurice J. Johnson. These pieces of literature can be useful for fashion beginners and/or fashion professionals. These books are certainly certified fashion best sellers!

“The Fashion Designer’s Survival Guide” by Mary Gehlhar is an exceptional book and a great resource of knowledge. This book submerges you in the fashion industry with real, hard-hitting facts and tips. Gehlhar has been in the industry for years. Her insight and knowledge on the industry is almost as good as having your very own personal fashion tutor! This book definitely tells you the ins and outs, ups and downs of the fashion industry. Many authors sugar-coat fashion with glitz and glamour when in fact, the reality of the industry is very harsh. Gehlhar discusses this as well provides real life examples and scenarios. You are guaranteed to learn something new and possibly gain inspiration from this piece of literature.

“Apparel Product Development: 2nd Edition” by Maurice J. Johnson has actually been used as a text book for fashion classes in certain colleges. Rightfully so, it gives a plethora of information of the fashion industry as well as possible careers within the industry. This is your ultimate A-Z guide on the fashion industry. As many text books would include, it has many activities and terms for you to learn. This book gets into extensive detail on everything from fabric history to retail marketing. This is definitely a must-read!

In addition, director Madhur Bhandarkar was nominated for Best Director. All together the film was also nominated for Best Film!

The story begins when Meghna (Priyanka Chopra) goes to Mumbai to become a supermodel. Meghna doesn’t drink, smoke, or do drugs, which is what makes the viewer think that she is different than other stereotyped models. In Mumbai she manages to get several small jobs modeling for various ads and low-key fashion shows. She meets another model that is also striving to build up his portfolio named Manav and Meghna eventually moves in with him for financial reasons. Eventually Meghna makes it big and begins to do ad campaigns for Panache, a large company in the fashion industry, and Meghna finally outshines Shonali, the head model for the company, and gets her position. Before leaving, Shonali warns Meghna that after a while, she won’t even recognize herself. However, Meghna is confident that she can handle being in the spotlight while remaining true to herself.

There are fashion trends and then there are fashion clichs. While there a lot of people wanting to make fashion statements, there are those who overdo it to the point of falling into the common pitfalls that are to the fashion industry branded as mortal sins. Fashion clichs are outfits and fashion finds that may seem sensible to the owner but actually conveys sweet and bitter amusement and egregiousness to the public. Interestingly, those that fall into fashion clichs are quite oblivious to reality and feel that they are fashion icons, when in fact they are ridiculously becoming fashion victims. In most cases, they feel very confident thinking they are sporting on the trendiest clothes, except that these were trends a couple of years back.

Different fashion and styles suit different people. A lot of people draw fashion inspiration from celebrities and other notable people, without realizing that they are already falling victim to fashion clichs. Do take note that a lot of celebrities are branded worst dressed and that their status do not give them any passport to violate any of the fashion and style rules. There are a lot of resources out there that you can use as guide in creating your own fashion and style, but you should make sure that your inspiration is a credible and equally sensible icon. Not all trends suite everyone and fashion trends come and go. Perfect timing is essential. There are those who have good hindsight and know what the latest style is and jump to another wave before their current style gets hackneyed. If you have a hard time keeping up with the latest trends, you don’t need to jump into the bandwagon. Instead of adapting to the most popular clothes, why not create your own style that fits your complexion, physique and lifestyle? This leads me to my next point of dressing not just for the occasion, but also for your age. Certain styles suit not just certain body shapes and figures but particular ages as well. To take off a few years, you can definitely dress a bit younger for your age, but you should know when to draw the line. If you are in your thirties, going on the safe side is always the default, but you if you can pull some cute little black dress for a night out with the ladies, that will not make you look like a cougar stuck in her quarter life crisis, then by all means wear it. This applies to the younger generations as well. Ironically, while a lot of women want to turn back time there are young ladies out there who can’t wait to grow up and do this by dressing more maturely.Lastly, not all trends are fashionable and stylish. History has told us that there were lots of fashion and style clichs that were not just ridiculed after they passed but have been rejected even as they entered the door. Not even the best of the models, fashion icons and designers can help redeem these fashion clichs. And if you are a levelheaded person that you think you are, you know better than to take interest in these trends.
